Hello

Bernice is 3 weeks old on Tuesday.

As you know I did have a rough ride with her- being very poorly after etc.

I ended up having an emergency section instead of my planned one.

This lead to a couple of probs in itself.

Firstly I did not have pre op assessment to check my mobility for the needles in the back. If I had they would have found that the RA had got into there and that I would have a great deal of probs getting it epiduralled.

They ended up having 6 agonising goes. By the time they got it in after an hour and 1/2 of trying (OW) me puking up over the midwife i was 4 hrs into full blown labour and wasnt really functioning brain wise. If I was I would had been i probably would have given it up as a bad job and begged for a GA!

still- it has meant that something isnt right with the sensation in my left foot on the left side.

Also I keep getting jarring pains up the spine.

The other thing is I am still bleeding. I did have a complication of a uterine infection post surgery (would be me wouldnt it) which I am taking anti biotics for still but I am still bleeding, much less now but watery loss nearly 3 weeks on is horrible! All 9 months period in one go I guess! YUM How glamourous!

THe actual scar is very neat- just above the public line and sore but not at all bad.My womb feels achy and bruised. but I expected that.

Just wondered if this was similar to you c section ladies?

Hi Jennie .

Firstley i am so glad you where put on Anibobics because i was,nt till an infection set right in .And they did nothing for 2 or 3 days and i yelled at them as i could hardley walk .This has led to scar tissue and no more babys .T o get preg again it would had been Docter made .i did not get any Anitobobics till jamie was at least 5 days old .

My scar is neat you can,t hardley see it now for a few years i have had to hunt for it .Left a kind of ridge where they cut the musles .i am never slim in that bit .

The other thing i bleed for 6 weeks .Before that i read that you bleed for 6 weeks and people told me you did .So may be it is normell i just stoped before the six week check up .

I took 8 weeks to heal .

And did not feel well till Jamie went though the night at 7 weeks .Before that without the rest i think with breast feeding bleeding i think you would feel poorley ?

I think the first 7 weeks where the worst as getting over the infection plus getting yet other infectoin ending back in hospital as the first lot od antibocics i finshed 5 days which i am glad you are still on them maybe they will keep you on them till you are healed .AS I PICKED jAMIE UPand poped something I think where the second infection came in .Also i had bad after care .
1986 THERE WAS A BABy boon babys everywhere in the hospital .

IS WHERE I THINK THE BAD AFTER CARE CAME IN .
tOLD TO DO PEVIC EXCISES 3 times a day which is wrong when you have a ceser that also made me ill as it stopd healing

Well Jennie hope you feel better soon ???Bernice is lovey .Its great Richead is home .Where my Steve had a weeks holiday .

love Christine Back again i also had a peroid 4 weeks after so they thought ??Is why i was bleeding i did 8 weeks after so this may had been right .Also bleed in beween .And had something done to the cerix a few weeks later .I can rembember being in Hospital with the second infectoin that the rest and the stoping of the pelive floor excises the bleeding subised .There where short staffed as so many babys born that year there where no beds .As soon as emptyed they where filled .My SON Jamie then went into the largeist class/s school had ever seen .But did no harm he is now at uni oxford Brookes 21 now he is .He being an only child .He has had the best of me .I was able to take him everywhere on the cheap we offton used to go away somewhere for little hols .And took him to ITALY while he was half price . christine

J enni, you should check with your GP or midwife about the bleeding just to make sure. Hope you are feeling better soon & glad little Bernice is doing well.

Oh Jenni - can't help with this but PLEASE PLEASE go and see you GP straight away. PLEASE. The only thing I CAN empathise with is the spinal block needle not doing as it's told and not going in. Just horrid, or as you would say BUM BUM BUM and PANTS. I was warned that there may be temporary loss of sensation in one or more of the nerves in the leg/ankle, but do keep a close eye on it and speak to someone if the feeling doesn't come back pdq.

Jenni, loads of love to you all.

Yes i would definitely ask a professional about this Jenni but as Christine says it is so easy to forget that you have had a major operation! How many other op can you think of where you would be out of hospital and handed a new born baby to look after as well as yourself!
I can't really help you as mine was 30 odd years ago and I can't remember!

Oh-and Happy Three Weeks birthday Bernice!

Jenni,

The bleeding is normal, they usually say about 6 weeks for this to stop, as for healing ,well as has been said before, this is a major op, and will take time, just be careful when bending and lifting, years ago you would have been kept in hospital for weeks, now like everything else they kick you out as soon as possible, as for the foot, l would check this with your GP but it might just take time for it to settle down.

Hope Bernice is settling into a routine for you.

Just dispatched Richard with screaming Baby to get iron tablets.

Also some gripe/ colic drops as Bernice decided not to sleep and have gripe wind all night so we are knackered.

Midwife been to check me out.

She says that bleeding and loss is fine and to be expected and all is healing well. She was very pleased they gave me extra anti biotics and I have another 2 weeks worth.

She says that with c sections (Tricky spine like mine) sometimes you can get "altered sensation" and in most cases it returns within 3 months.

BUT bearing in mind the diabetes and other complications i should mention it when I go for the check in 3 weeks at the hosp. If things change and it gets worse/ really bothering me then it is off to the GP.

Going to get half an hour shut eye.

Thanks for all the lovely messages.

Hi Jenni,
As I really cannot answer or help you with you question on emergency c section etc, It was very interesting to read about it as I will no doubt have to have the same, although they haven't said yet if I will or not, it sounds like absolute agony that you went through after 6 agonising tries.

But I'm glad the midwife has give you some more anti-biotics etc and hope you begin to feel a lot better soon. Hope little Bernice feels better too, nothing worse than colic etc, Get some shut eye and rest when you can, take care Jenni, Love, Alison xx

Alison

They told me that it would be a 50/ 50 chance of having a c section because the diabetes means the baby needs to be born early. This is to minimise risk to you and Nail.

In comfort to you spinal involvement in RA tends to be in people who have had the RA for some yrs and fairly severely.

You need to ask the gynea and obs team for an early anesthetic appt so they can look at the neck and spine and order xrays etc early on so you can make an informed choice- or they are prepared in an emergency.

all things being equal with me they would have given me a proper pre op assessment on fri and I would have been in having Bernice today.

They would have had a line into my arm the night before, would have realised the damaged spine and properly worked out a way of supporting my neck whilst they put in the epidural. They wouldn't have attempted the epidural without the most senior anesthetist there and him doing it.

All these things in place and it would have been much easier.

Perhaps an ask in the right ear might have saved some of this.

Still, end result as Richard says is "gold refined by fire!"

Hi Jenni,
Thanks for the tips etc, I'll certainly be asking about this when I next see them at the clinic, I assume at the moment the reason they haven't mentioned anything about a c section is they seem more concerned about these hypos etc...I think in time this will change though!

Its a shame things couldn't of been realised earlier with you and things would of been easier etc, Take care of yourselves and Richard is spot on about "gold refined by fire" Hang in there, and Thanks again, Alison xx

We go here Christine

http://www.sttoms.co.uk/

It is a lively anglican. I was brought up Baptist and this is the first c of e I have been to.

We have been coming here for about 4 yrs now and I LOVE it there. It is the only church I have ever been to where I dont groan at the thought of getting up on a sunday!

The children love it too and that makes a big difference.

Sorry Jenni i forgot where you posted this .Found it .
I WAS BROUGHT up as a methodist and hated sundays .And best clothes as that what you wore sundays .

As a teenager i got out of going .

When i came here in 1981 i saw the bapist Church being re built .Never guessed two years later i would be getting married there .
Then i met Steve .Not a christain but a work mate took him to the Bapist Church which was carismaic and lively .Steve took me the next week .

Thing blew from there .I enjoyed going and we both made a commiment .
Then we married there .But 15 YEARS later Steve became unhappy there and i found i sometimes was a stranger as it got so big .Jamie did well there in Sunday school .But the time came when Steve wanted something quiter .So we came to join the Nazarenes we meet in a school which is a dream for us as allways where involied in the mantaing of the buildings

We rent our rooms which sometimes is a nusance and sometimes a blessing but theres no painting no cleaning no mending things .

Steves on Church board we have round 50ish mark and lots of children
a good sunday school clubs its on an estate which we help out in the commity and in the school we meet at .
We have been there almost 10 years now .I we because some off our people are older and we have lots of youngesters we have a kind of mixed sevice to suit everyone .Which i like .I enjoy going .

We have a good sunday school which is expanding .One little girl wrote to say how much she enjoyed coming litlle 10 yr old .

Jamie our son played the paino for us .From the age of 9 till he stoped going .Now some of the older youngsers will get togetor to make music for us .We used to have a good teenagers club where they used to have a speaker but most have gone to uni .

www.Kingslynn-nazarene.org.uk the web site is now being took over by my Hubby

I loved the look of your church if i ever come that way i would look it up and come .Still see folks from the bapist church pastors wife has P.A So we meet up .

HI

As you may have read on the main bit my hands and connected bits are hurting and not working so well- not resting much with small baby etc.

Well, I have been using a mixture of different nappies.

Originally I got Pampers New borns and they were good but pricey.

Then tried tesco's own and they were cheaper but went through twice as many and Bernice cried a lot as she got wet quick.

Then tried the Huggies newborns and I found their tabs and stretchyness easier than the pampers but they still have small sticky tabs.

SO...

I have been looking at reusable ones (for day times at least) and I have settled on the tots bots range and have to say am VERY impressed.

At night I have found even with the "booster" the reusable ones arent as good so will carryon with the huggies at night.

But the tots bots are large and fluffy with large (1 1/2 inch) velcro tabs and no tricky frills or elastic or fiddly poppers/ small sticky tabs. PLastic pants over the top and bobs ya uncle.

PLus the liner flushes down the lav and you keep the wet nappies in a bucket and pre wash cycle and then wash at 40 degrees with me persil. that is that.

No smelly soaking.

And it is cheaper and better for the environment- but best of all good for crappy RA ridden hands.

Love

Jenni and a clean, dry Bernice!

Good for you Jenni,

When l had my two, we had to use terry nappies, and we managed fine, dont know how mums today can afford to use disposables all the time, and as you say they are not good for the environment. Keep up the good work.

the tots bots are cotton but more absorbant than the terrys were/ are.

They look white and fluffy but do up the same as disposables

I think they have a web site.

OH yes one beware- some of the reusables use the dreaded poppers (which are the bains of my life at the moment as it seems illegal to have a sleepy suit without them!)

The tots bots and one or 2 others use the velcros which are easier.

Well Jennie .

You will save loads of money .And they are not that bad .24 will do .

I used to wash every other day .Put them on a full rince .So the yuks out

And i used to wash at 60 .And they used to be pure white .With an ato matic washers are no proplems .Only winter time when dried indoors sometimes need a but of fuffing up in driier .SPRING SUMMER no prolems

The night time nappies are hit and miss as some babies wee a lot .And can leek.

With all the babies i have looked after .Nappies before 6 weeks old i don,t know why you seem to use a lot .And can never find one that suits .

PAMPERS 1 and hugies 2nd are the best . I used to use just 3 if i caught the poos .I used to find pampers where the best money wise as used less .

When useing terries .I used pampers at night when baby got bigger cos of leaking and when out .But terries well i just used to take a bag to put them in ..But sometime pampers out .Sometimes night time terries on little wee/ers big wee/ers no did not think the babies liked them as so big
ok if home to do extra washing if leaked .And of course liners plasic pants .

After a year old i gave up useing terries as they wee more .But the new ones could be loads better .But money saving terries are best

Hi Jenni
I am using washable nappies as well. I use daisy diapers (which I don't think they make any more) they do up with velcro and then need a wrap on top also velcro. I don't find them a problem and as they contain poo much better I find I don't have to change Alice's clothes as often as if she is in disposables.
Have you tried the vests from Mothercare they do up with velcro and therefore are much easier than poppers. Also I find nighties are easier for nightime nappy changes.

Take care and try to rest as much as you can.

I think I was once advised to train her to put her little thumb in instead and hold it for her for a while, amazing how soon they learn but of course not QUITE as easy to wean her off a thumb!

the quickest way.I got our son out of sucking his thumb .

Was took him to the denist .The denist said Jamie if you suck your thumb your teeth will stick out and you will need a brace .

He stoped that night .I think he was 4 or 5 .

the nct website has soft bras without the catches for breast feeding.

i have been wearing these but they have no support and boobs after bernice arent what they were!

Hi

Bit sensitive subject but ever since I gave birth i keep getting horrid thrush.

To start with when I was bleeding a lot I thought I was just sore but it has gone on and on.

Used the canesten, it comes back!

I even got it under my boobs and my arms! Lovely.

I only ever had it once before when I took loads of anti biotics.

is this normal post delivery?

Is there anything else I can do?

oooo poor girl-how I sympathise!

Can be quite common in diabetics.
Plus and this IS delicate-but partners need to be treated for it too maybe? Else it just keeps going from one to the other?

Natural yogurt is supposed to good, both topically and to be eaten.

Oh Jenni, poor you, thrush is a nightmare, i've had it before. The cream does help to sooth but it is probably best to get tablet from dr called diflucon. It's just one tablet that you take orally and it works very quickly. Takecare.

Hi Jenni, Oh not that bxxxxy bird again! (remember my experience in hospital 'immune system nasties - 20 Nov thread)

It just keeps coming back, I even get it between my fingers where they cross over due to the RA. Often worse during pregnancy, but steroids, the RA and other drugs which affect immune system give opportunity for infection to take hold. Babies can get it in their mouths (looks like milk deposits) and their nappy bits bless them.

Canesten One treatment (inside and out), but it does recur.

There is also Nystan cream, pessary and tablets, which are a long course (something like a month) but do upset the tum (runs etc, yuk).

No soap at all just water for washing, keeping cool and no knickers are recommended!

If natural yoghurt is supposed to work, maybe probiotic tablets or something from health food shop?

Good luck Jenni, it does drive you nuts I know.
Take care, Lizxx

Think Christine's idea is good - also bathing the affected parts in warm salt water. Thrush is just HATEFUL. I had it when I was pregnant and didn't dare go out for two weeks because of the itching and scratching. Poor Jenni - so sorry xxxxxxx

Hello

I was wondering if you more experienced RAers can answer me on this one.

I have been awful with the RA and am going to BAth on fri hopefully for a steroids pulse and then home but there is a chance, just a chance, that they will want me to stay in there. They will let Bernie stay with me.

I am taking stuff for me and Bernice just in case and my sister is driving us, so logistically we're ok BUT

Has anyone had experience of taking their baby into hosp? How did it work? DO they come and help with baby and warm her bottles and help lift her etc?

I am not leaving her at home and that is that- I know what disrupted attachment can do to children and I am NOT going there with Bernice.

any experiences?

Hi Jenni,
I haven't any experience of this, but I'm sure Bernice will be welcomed
onto the ward as it will be such a novelty for the staff. Most people just
love babies and I bet they'll be falling over themselves to help you with her! Also I believe it's a ward for people with RA so they should all know what help you'll need. Hope it all goes smoothly for you.

Hi Jenni, though mine were babies with my RA I had no available hospital inpatient care until they were 11, 9 and 7. The separation was awful - for me anyway, especially for month long admissions - but they were at school. I still feel sad about it though.

It seemed to me that every hospital had its own arrangement for Mums and babies, depending on their facilities etc. When I was in Stanmore the Sister there bent over backwards to help her patients with children, even allowing teenagers to stay in the nurses home so they could see their Mums at weekends, as we all came from far away.

Why dont you give the PALS office at Bath a ring to see what arrangements they have there? They arent just there for complaints, but to help and advise their patients. Do you have a rheumy nurse at Bath - if so she may be able to advise.

Can well understand your anxieties, I would feel the same.
Hope this goes well for you.

Take care, Lizxx

what a good idea- I hadn't thought of PALS

I hate having to be away from Michael, Gemma and my family.

that is the trouble with going so far away to Bath but I do see them at weekends.

i simply wouldnt consider hospital without Bernie

sorry its me again.

in a mess because Bernice was up awake and WAAAAAAAAing in the night and the pain in my body was out of this world.

So now cannot go the Bath for apt.

I totally lost my temper and shouted and swore at the top of my voice in the night.

I would never ever of hurt Bernice but at that moment I had lost it.

Thankfully richard took over for it bit. Luckily for him he just snores through most of it- I could have killed him in the night, I felt so cross with him being asleep and me being awake dealing with it all.

2am- 4am with a screaming baby and my body in agony It was not a pretty sight.

What the hell am I doing???

My heart racing, I am just so hot all the time.

I feel like a bag of radiators on full blast in a heat wave.

I sleep in little bursts at best then my heart goes off and the emotions surge- the pain bites and my head nearly blew clean off.

I dont know what to do.

Richard is home. What a lovely wife I am ! Crying all over his day off.

Thanks for listening

Love to all

Hi Jenni,
From what Julie says perhaps you should try to see a doc.
I sympathise entirely with you over Bernice being awake in the night. I used to get like that, I would never have hurt Hannah but the longer it took to get her back to sleep the angrier I became, because I knew I needed the energy to get through the next day, and that was before RA! I also think a lot of the anger was caused by the sight of Ian fast asleep and totally oblivious to what was happening!
Hope you can get some rest today Jenni and try to get an appointment with your Gp today if possible.
Love and hugs,
Doreen xx

I'm just wondering Jenni. I would never normally recommend this as a routine thing but in emergencies such as this, would Benice enjoy nodding back off to the accompaniment of tele or a gentle video playing?
I know----it's a terrible thing to suggest but sometimes needs must?

Hi Love

YOU'VE SAID THE BANNED "S" WORD - NAUGHTY!!

Did the pain or the waaing Babe stop you from going to Bath and how long will it be before you can have another appointment?

It's a bit of a catch 22 situation this - because you desperately need that appontment.

I agree about a trip to the GP though - just in case you have picked up a virus of some sort.

Thank goodness Richard is home to help out this afternoon.

Much love coming your way

you just took me back 24 years ago and the anger that used to well up inside of me i never did anything to hurt my boys but the overwhelming tiredness (and that was without RA) my hubby was in the army and we were living in germany no family around. Hubby used to go away sometimes weeks and months and I can just remember that anger so vividly. I often think I would not of coped if this blasted RA had come to me when my boys were little. So i think you have every right to shout and scream. Get as much help as you can and go to docs.

hi all

just to update and thanks for all that heart felt support.

I needed it!

I saw the gp who shot me with morphine to do something for the terrible pain.

She has made some suggestions for the trouble in the rght hip which is my particular problem in the night (along with the global exhaustion and pain) which is to have an ultra sound with guided aneathetic. I know I cannot have the steroid most likely so that might be an alternative.

In the meantime, back onto the zomorph and worry about coming off when I start having the TOcilizumab, when / if it comes.

I think it probably was exhaustion and pain, but my throat is very dry and i am still hot! so maybe some virus action too

love jenni xx

Hi all

Bernice had a dreadful night last night. Crying and rubbing her gums and thoroughly miserable.

Up 4 times.

She is struggling to settle without mummy. Wants to be close to me. Richard will do but she wont even 100% settle with him

She now has 3 jagged teeth through at the top, 2 already fully grown at the bottom.

she wont go to sleep this morning.

Should I take her to the out of hour drs?

What do you think?

Hi Babe

Sorry you all had a bad night.

George was just like this and Lucy dosed him up with baby calpol and rubbed bonjela on his gums. She also gave him bits of soluable baby paracetamol. Don't really think the doc would do any more than that. However, if the little thing develops a high temperature, then call him out.

Hope she settles - it's very distressing for you and her when she is like this.

Love and prayers

There are some very good herbal teething powders you can get, work really well, cant remember the name but am sure your chemist will know them, as Jean said dont think a doc will do anything else, hope she is feeling better soon, blooming teeth, painful when getting them, painful when you got them, and still painful when loosing them.

Hi Jenni,
So sorry you've both had a bad night.
I agree with the others though, dose her with Calpol and infant Nurofen, there's not much else a doc can do.
But if she gets a temperature she should see someone.
Hope you manage to get some rest today.

Oh dear Jenni, you have hit that spot where we all went as parents. Teething was a misery of our 2 boys but Jennie didn't fare so badly. It is so difficult when there is nothing we can do during this troublesome time. I do hope you find some answers from others or your GP.

Sending you a much needed .

Hi all

Decided not to take her to out of hours service in the end as I am now fairly sure it is nothing but her teeth making her so miserable.

In the end we did the scottish stuff on the gums, she kept trying to suck it off richards fingers (obviously after his own heart there...)

We had given her calpol and nurofen and bongela and even the teething salts.

She is not interested in food- just gets in the way of her poking at her little gums .

She has had a sleep at last after church and settled quite well in the service, she was funny there!

There was a little boy baby on the mat sucking a dummy and she crawled up to him, took his dummy and popped it in her mouth!!

eww!

She chewed a few ladies handbags and patted the chairs and knees of the congregation with glee.

It is chilly and damp here today- very autumnal.

the children and richard have taken my friends doggy flora up the park this afternoon- hopefully give littlun a bit more appetite.

thanks everyone.

Hi all

Just a little thing to brighten your days!

Bernice went to the dentist with all of us this week for the second time in her life, but the first time she had no teeth!

This time she does have teeth, 4 through and nos 5 and 6 almost through the gum

Anyway- in the waiting room she did the rounds, smiling at all the other patients- crawling at top speed up and down, giggling happily at the fish tank etc.

When we went into see the dentist would she open her little choppers?

NO chance!

Vice like, clamped shut little gob.

The dentist had his mask off so as not to frighten her, she spotted it and THWAK

She pinged his mask!

While he nursed a Pinged ear bernie giggled and clapped and he got a good look at her pearly whites and said they were fine! lol

There, told you it would cheer you all up.

Off to do the dreaded parents eve with gemma and michael, (baby in tow)

Love
